Difference between Amitiza and Movantik

What is Amitiza?

Amitiza (lubiprostone) is a prescription drug with a brand name. In adults, it’s used to treat three types of constipation:

  • Idiopathic constipation is a type of chronic constipation that occurs for no apparent reason (CIC)
  • Females with IBS-C (irritable bowel syndrome with constipation)
  • Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in persons who are using opioids for long-term pain that isn’t caused by cancer.

Amitiza belongs to the class of drugs known as chloride channel activators. It’s not a stool softener, a fiber, or a laxative in the classic sense. It does, however, have the same side effects as these other medicines. It helps move stool by increasing the amount of fluid in your intestines.

How Amitiza works
Amitiza belongs to the chloride channel activator class of medicines. Chloride channels can be found in practically every type of cell in your body. They’re proteins that help chemicals move across cell membranes.

These chloride channels in your intestine are activated (activated) by Amitiza. The volume of fluid flowing into your intestine is increased as a result of this process. This extra fluid helps constipation by allowing feces to flow through your system more readily.

How long does it take to work?
Amitiza gets to work right away. For example, in a clinical studyTrusted Source, the use of Amitiza in people with chronic idiopathic constipation was investigated (CIC). Within 24 hours of taking the drug, almost 57 percent of the patients in the study had a bowel movement. Only 37% of those who got a placebo (no medicine) experienced this effect.

80 percent of those who took Amitiza had a bowel movement within 48 hours after starting medication. Only 61% of those in the placebo group experienced the same outcome.

What is Movantik?

Movantik is a prescription drug that is used to treat constipation caused by opioid prescription pain relievers in individuals who have long-term (chronic) pain that is not caused by active cancer. Movantik’s safety and efficacy in youngsters are unknown.
