Controversy

  • In1993, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a lawsuit against Cancer Treatment Centers of America. The FTC stated that CTCA’s marketing and advertising materials made misleading statements about the success rates of such cancer therapies.CTCA advertised that it could treat some types of cancer with procedures like “whole body hyperthermia” and “brachytheraphy,” among other unsubstantiated statements. This claim was settled in March 1996 with an injunction, requiring CTCA to discontinue use of any unsubstantiated claims in its advertising.CTCA is additionally required to possess proven, scientific evidence for all statements regarding the security , success rates, endorsements, and benefits of its cancer treatments. CTCA was also required to follow various steps so as to report compliance to the FTC per the settlement. The injunction expired in2016, after a 20-year stretch of no violations.
  • Almost all major cancer centers engaged in false ads, according to a study published by Truth in Advertising in2018,summarized in Medscape Accessed Feb5,2019. They claimed that, of all the centers surveyed, CTCA spent the most money on such advertising in 2017.The experts said that the patients of CTCA and SEER were incompatible, and that the contrast was skewed in favor of CTCA.CTCA’s patients, for example, were younger and had better insurance: according to Reuters, CTCA “has very few elderly patients [and] almost none who are Medicaid-eligible or uninsured.” Additional details on CTCA treatment results on methodology and sources of data are often found on the issued CTCA treatment results publication.
